Athens

If you decide to stay in Athens, below are some well-known sites to see while you’re there.

Parthenon and Acropolis

The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient hilltop citadel in Athens that served as the religious and cultural center of classical Greece. At its heart stands the Parthenon, a 5th-century BC temple dedicated to Athena and a lasting symbol of ancient Greek architecture and democracy.

Plaka

Plaka is the oldest neighborhood in Athens, set at the foot of the Acropolis with narrow streets, neoclassical houses, and small cafés. It feels more like a village than a city, blending everyday local life with layers of ancient history.

Monastiraki

Monastiraki is a lively historic district in central Athens known for its flea market, small shops, and street life. It sits at the crossroads of ancient ruins and modern Athens, with views of the Acropolis rising above the square.

Islands

Not in Athens, but one of the best locations to begin from. The Greek Islands are a vast collection of islands spread across the Aegean and Ionian Seas, known for dramatic coastlines, whitewashed villages, and deep blue water. Each island has its own character, blending ancient history, local traditions, and relaxed Mediterranean life. Visiting the islands requires additional days of travel and planning, but Athens is an excellent starting point.
